Trout
Rivers/Streams - Beas River, Parvati River, Tirthan River and their Tributaries
Kullu Valley is
one of the best destinations when it comes to adventurous leisure activity like
Trout angling. Tirthan was once known as the heaven for trout angling for its
crystal clear water. But with hard efforts of Trout Conservation & Angling
Association Kullu and Fisheries Department the main Rivers like Beas, Parvati
and their tributaries are teaming with exotic trout fish. One can spend entire
day casting lures and flies to hook the beautiful trout.
Types of
Trout Species in the Valley
Rainbow Trout – The rainbow trout is native only to the rivers
and lakes of North America, west of the Rocky Mountains, but its value as a
hard-fighting game fish and tasty meal has led to its introduction throughout
the world. Rainbow trout, also
called redband trout, are gorgeous fish, with coloring and patterns that vary
widely depending on habitat, age, and spawning condition. They are
torpedo-shaped and generally blue-green or yellow-green in color with a pink
streak along their sides, white underbelly, and small black spots on their back
and fins. They are members of the salmon family. This species is breaded in the farms from where
the fingerlings are stocked into the rivers and streams.
Brown Trout - is
originally European species of Salmonid fish. It includes both purely
freshwater populations, referred to Salmo Trutta. It was introduced to
Himalayan streams first in Kashmir in the 1860’s and later from there to the
Beas. This game fish is known around the world for its fighting capabilities
among the anglers. Stocking of brown trout in rivers of this valley over the
last hundred years has enabled them to evolve accordingly with the environment and
hence also termed as ‘Hungry Himalayan Trout’.
Angling Season in
the valley starts from 1st March to 31st October. Rest of
the four months angling is banned by the fishery department as it is the
spawning time for the fish.
